Manchester United, formerly known as Newton Heath LYR Football Club, was founded in 1878 by local railway workers.
It was on the verge of bankruptcy in 1902, but John Henry Davies provided a financial boost, and the club was renamed to its current name.
They won their first league title in 1908, having already played several games against Liverpool. The Reds were founded in 1892 as a result of a dispute between Anfield owner John Houlding and Everton directors.
The Toffees previously played their home games in Liverpool’s iconic stadium, but the new team has adopted the venue as its own. Both cities played important roles in Great Britain’s Industrial Revolution.
By the 18th century, Manchester had grown in population and prominence in northern England, but Liverpool had quickly established itself as an important seaport.
Liverpool’s inaugural season was in the 1893/94 Second Division. The Reds would go unbeaten all season, winning the title and a one-game promotion playoff against Newtong Heath, who was at the bottom of the First Division. Liverpool won 2-0.
The first time a side officially called Manchester United played Liverpool was in 1903.
That game took place in the FA Cup, and United won 2-1 thanks to two goals from Jack Peddie.
