Bayer Leverkusen star admits Man Utd are in his heart and will look forward in summer

Bayer Leverkusen shot-stopper, Matej Kovar, acknowledges that Manchester United remains a significant part of his football journey even after his departure from the club in 2023.

Matej Kovar commenced his tenure with Manchester United in 2018 at the age of 17. Despite a promising start, he remained within the Under-21 setup for five years without securing a spot in the first team.

Throughout his time at the club, Kovar did not make a single appearance for the senior squad. Following loan spells at various clubs, including Swindon Town, Burton Albion, and Sparta Prague, the Czech goalkeeper eventually made a permanent switch to the Bundesliga side, Bayer Leverkusen.

Manchester United Still Holds a Place in Matej Kovar’s Heart

Despite his inability to break into Manchester United’s first team, the club ensured a first refusal clause in Kovar’s deal with Bayer Leverkusen. Following a £7.7m transfer fee, Kovar signed a four-year contract with Bayer Leverkusen.

However, due to the exceptional performance of veteran goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky, Kovar has seen limited playing time under the management of Xabi Alonso. While he has only appeared once in the Bundesliga, Kovar has been a consistent presence in cup competitions, featuring in ten matches across the DFB-Pokal and UEFA Europa League this season.

During an interview with Sport while representing his national team, Czechia, Kovar addressed the possibility of returning to Manchester United in the future. He expressed his current focus on establishing himself as a regular starter at Bayer Leverkusen before considering any potential moves.

However, Kovar emphasized the enduring significance of Manchester United in his career, stating, “Of course, they’re [United] still in my heart. I spent many years at the club. I’ll consider it when the opportunity arises.”

Despite acknowledging the challenges Manchester United currently faces, Kovar remains optimistic about the club’s future. He highlighted United’s prestigious status as a “big and great club” and expressed hope for its resurgence.

Kovar reiterated his belief in the decision to join Bayer Leverkusen, emphasizing the opportunity to play for one of Europe’s top teams. He concluded by expressing confidence in his choice and anticipating validation in the future.
