32-year-old Manchester United star, could be on the verge of a remarkable return to his former club, Ajax, according to footballing legend Brian Laudrup. Drawing parallels with Aragorn’s triumphant homecoming in “The Lord of the Rings,” Laudrup believes that Eriksen would be welcomed back to Ajax as a hero, a sentiment echoed by many.
Christian Eriksen, was a pivotal part of the Ajax squad that secured three consecutive Eredivisie titles over a decade ago, making his potential homecoming all the more poignant. Such a move could inject positivity into a club that has recently faced turbulent times, with Ajax suffering a humiliating 6-0 defeat to Feyenoord, marking their worst-ever Eredivisie loss.
Reflecting on the possibilities, Laudrup, a figure of immense stature in Denmark, stated, “When I look at the possibilities and where he has come from and where he can do fantastically well for a few more years, then Ajax will be a fantastic place.” He added, “I also know that Ajax have mentioned that they are interested. After his cardiac arrest (at the 2021 European Championships), he was in Amsterdam rehabilitating. He knows the city, he knows the language and he knows the club. They will almost receive him as a king returning home.”
Eriksen’s departure from Manchester United seems highly probable this summer as the club seeks to streamline its wage bill and decrease the average age of the squad. It is expected that Eriksen will be among the notable exits alongside Casemiro and Raphael Varane, both in their 30s.
Laudrup hinted at a potential “old boys” midfield reunion at Ajax, pointing out the arrival of Jordan Henderson from Liverpool in January. He commented, “They might have a bit of an ‘old boys’ midfield with (Jordan) Henderson and Eriksen, but there will be many exciting things about returning to Amsterdam.”
Eriksen’s recent playing time at Manchester United has been limited, with only one appearance off the bench in their last ten Premier League matches. He was again an observer during their recent 2-2 draw against Liverpool. The pace and intensity of the Premier League, combined with Erik ten Hag’s tactical style, may have posed challenges for Eriksen, particularly as rising talent Kobbie Mainoo continues to impress.
Eriksen, acknowledging his frustration with the situation, stated, “I myself have stated earlier that I am not satisfied with not playing. But it is not something I lose sleep over. The team is performing, and so I have to respect the role.” He emphasized his dedication to staying fit and available for the team, expressing his willingness to contribute whenever called upon.
