The back chose to have surgery without the club’s control, which made his rehab longer and caused problems that made it harder for him to play again.
There are concerns about the Dutchman’s future at Old Trafford, so possible moves to improve the team are being considered.
This season (2023–24), Manchester United has had a lot of injuries, but none more so than at left back. It’s been the whole season without Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw has been out for long periods of time.
Shaw has missed a lot of games at different times this season, but the England international has at least been seen. But you can’t say that about his friend Malacia. Fans of both Man United and the Netherlands have been wondering where the lively full-back has been.
The 24-year-old was a good player in his first season in England. He joined Manchester United from Feyenoord in 2022 to play with fellow Dutchman Erik ten Hag. He was mostly seen as Shaw’s backup, but he had the ability to become Shaw’s first choice in that job in the years to come.
Malacia hasn’t played for his country since June 2023, when they played Croatia in the UEFA Nations League. He has been out for 10 months, and will be out for more than a year because of an injury.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United, and Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, were both cheering.
The way Tyrell Malacia disobeyed club orders
Because of this, Tyrell Malacia hasn’t played for Manchester United for a long time.
“The Athletic” says the defence may be to blame for his injuries. The back is said to have had knee pain during United’s pre-season training camp, and his club told him he should have surgery.
Still, even though a surgeon in London was offered to do the surgery, the Dutchman chose to have it done by a doctor of his choice in his own country. The people in charge let this happen, but things seem to have gone badly since then.
Key Stat: Tyrell Malacia has missed more than 40 Manchester United games because of a knee injury.
The surgery took place away from the club without any supervision, and things seemed fine at first as Malacia tried to get fit again in August 2023. It was thought that he would come back to make up for Shaw’s absence in the first few months of the 2023–24 season. Scans showed that small pieces of cartilage were still around the meniscus, so this wasn’t the case.
Because of the problems that came up, the man who used to play for Feyenoord could either have a second surgery or keep going to rehab. It was decided that Malacia would have surgery again by the same surgeon, but this time someone from Man United would be there to watch over everything.

Ten Hag thought Malacia would come back.
Sergio Reguilon was brought in as a short-term fix. Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag yelling orders from the sidelines
It is thought that United boss Ten Hag was looking forward to Malacia’s return in January, even though the club had said that his healing had been slowed down in late 2023.
Sergio Reguilon was brought in on loan to fill in at left back while players were out, but the Spaniard was free to go back to Tottenham during the winter transfer window. He finally moved to Brentford.
The Red Devils didn’t have a senior left back because Ten Hag’s back-up choice hadn’t come back yet and Shaw was still having trouble getting fit. Many times, Diogo Dalot has played on the left side of the defence, but Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been out with an injury, so the Portuguese defender has had to go back to his natural position on the right.
What Will Malacia Do Next?
Tyrell Malacia of Manchester United may not have much time left at the club.
Both Malacia and Shaw are great players when they’re on form, but their inconsistent play is becoming too much for a team that wants to compete in all the major tournaments for years to come. At the end of the season, at least one of them could be traded for a more reliable player.
Full-backs are very important in today’s games. Ten Hag’s style needs players who can play out from the back, which means that the team always needs a natural left back. Fans of Theo Hernandez and Miguel Gutierrez have said they want to move to Old Trafford because Shaw and Malacia are having trouble.
There aren’t many details about the club’s plans now that Sir Jim Ratcliffe is in charge, but big changes are likely to happen. If Malacia doesn’t play again until the 2024–25 season, his time in England may be coming to an end.
