Erik ten Hag may have frequently downplayed the issue of Manchester United letting in a lot of shots, but Diogo Dalot now says it’s a problem and has given a few reasons for it.
There is no way for the Red Devils to stop their opponents from getting too many shots on goal. While it hasn’t always cost them wins and has made them very exciting, it’s clear that goalie Andre Onana needs to do a lot of work on it.
United had eight shots on goal against 20 for Bournemouth in Saturday’s 2-2 draw, so the trend didn’t change. Dalot isn’t acting like it’s not a problem.
“I believe it’s true and something we want,” the full-back said after the draw at Bournemouth. You could say that we’re taking too many risks. There is sometimes too much space between the defense and the middle.
Because of this, we sometimes give up too many goals and get counterattacked too often. But overall, we’re excited to use this as a chance to learn and get better.
“I’m really upset.” We came to this place to get the three points. We were down twice, which made us want to win the game. It was written into the game that we lost control of things we shouldn’t have.
“We lost a little control, especially when we tried to build up from the back when we shouldn’t have, and we gave up two goals in the first half that we could have avoided. But overall, we have the desire to fight for the win, and that’s a good thing to take away.”
Ten Hag hasn’t been as open about the problem. Even after the crazy 4-3 loss to Chelsea earlier this month, he criticized those who said bad things about him.
He said, “That’s silly.” “We showed that we were ranked fourth in goals allowed before this game.” “After the game, everyone is talking to each other. We’re good, we have a good goalkeeper, and we have a good back four, so I can’t do anything with those stats.”
After a 1-1 draw with Brentford, the Dutch manager said, “Our results have been pretty consistent since January. We give up shots, but we don’t give up so many goals.”
Ten Hag focused on the good things after another bad loss at Bournemouth. He told Match of the Day, “We know we have to win.” We want to fight and compete for the top spots. You saw the game; the first half was tough for us, Harry. Maguire was having a hard time, but he got through it because we needed him to.
“The second half was much better. It’s good that we came back twice from being down.” There is good team unity.
“We could have played more chance outs and kept things calmer by the end.” The other team was having a hard time because they put in so much effort in the first half and there were so many gaps, but we didn’t take advantage of it.
