Manchester United defeated Sheffield United in the Premier League.
Overall, it was a solid performance. Despite being two goals behind, the Red Devils rallied back strongly. Rasmus Hojlund scored the night’s last goal, which was undoubtedly the most rewarding.
The Danish attacker has been out of form, with no goals since February. On Wednesday night, he was perhaps the most relieved guy at Old Trafford.
Rasmus Hojlund broke Manchester United’s duck.
This was Hojlund’s first goal since scoring twice against Luton Town in the Premier League on February 18th, 2024.
This was his sixth game without a goal for the Red Devils, a dramatic contrast to his previous record-breaking form, when he scored seven times in six league outings before his injury.
According to The Athletic, they offered some statistics during his hiatus that are pretty fascinating.
‘Hojlund played 612 minutes for United in all competitions but only took seven shots, four of which were blocked and two of which were on target.’
‘During the same time period, he only touched the ball in the opposing penalty area 23 times, and his anticipated goals figure (xG), which is a statistic that quantifies the quality of each shot before the player fires, was 0.49.
Despite the 21-year-old’s misfire, Erik ten Hag has stood with him, which ought to be congratulated.
What Rasmus Hojlund did at the last whistle against Sheffield
Hojlund was substituted in the 89th minute by Ethan Wheatley, a Manchester United academy product, and ended the game on the substitutes bench.
According to the Athletic, as soon as the final whistle blew, Hojlund rushed from his place in the bench and proceeded to shake Ten Hag’s hand. This gesture says volumes; he is obviously grateful to the gaffer who has remained with him over the previous six months.
Given the absurd number of injuries the Red Devils have suffered, the Manchester United boss was compelled to continue with Hojlund throughout this trying period.
Ten Hag continued with the forward, and he eventually received his reward against the Blades. We can only hope that the £64 million guy can kick on at the conclusion of the season. His first cup final in red awaits.
