Early Life

Anthony Jordan Martial is the youngest of three sons born on December 5, 1995, to his parents, Joran Martial (father) and Audrey Martial (mother), who are immigrants from the Caribbean island of Guadelupe.

When his parents relocated to France, they attempted to provide for their children born there. As they sought to escape poverty, they turned to football and encouraged their children to participate in it.

The Martials were great friends with the family of former French football player Thierry Henry. Their bond was heavily inspired by the fact that both families hail from the Caribbean island of Guadalupe.

After inquiring about how their sons might participate in football, Young Martial and his brothers began playing. Thierry Henry was Martial’s mentor. He consequently followed in his mentor’s footsteps and attended the same football academy where Henry began his remarkable career, CO Les Ulis.

Football career

CO Les Ulis (2001–2009)

In 2001, a young Martial began his football journey at CO Les Ulis, honing his skills and talents. His impressive performances at CO Les Ulis caught the attention of Ligue 1 club Olympique Lyonnais, leading to his signing after eight years in the academy.

Lyon (2009–2012)

He played for Lyon’s youth squad. In his second year, he enjoyed an outstanding season for Lyon’s U-17 team, scoring 32 goals in 21 games. This boosted his career, as he was discovered by the French National U-17 team and made his senior debut in a Europa League game against Hapoel Ironi Kiryat Shmona in December 2012. Two months later, he made his debut in Ligue 1.

AS Monaco (2013-2015)

In June 2013, AS Monaco signed Martial to a three-year contract worth around €5 million, including bonuses. In November of the same year, he made his Ligue 1 debut with Monaco.

About a week later, he scored his first league goal against Rennes. The next month, an injured ankle held him out of action.

His contract was extended to June 2018 in recognition of his strong debut performance.

Martial started his second season at Monaco by scoring in a 1-1 tie with PSG in October. By the end of the season, Martial had scored nine goals in 36 Ligue 1 games. He went on to sign another one-year contract extension.

Manchester United (2015–present)

In September 2015, Martial signed a four-year contract with Manchester United worth around £36 million, which may increase to £58 million if he wins the Ballon d’Or or makes 25 appearances for the French national team in those four years.

His deal was the biggest United had ever paid for a teenager. In his debut against Liverpool in September 2015, he scored his first goal for the club. In his first EPL appearance, he scored twice against Southampton.

In the third round of the League Cup, he scored his fourth goal in four games, earning accolades from former United boss Alex Ferguson.

He was named PFA Fan’s Player of the Month, Goal of the Month, and EPL Player of the Month in recognition of his outstanding performance in September. He was the third youngest player in United history to win the EPL Player of the Month title.

He was honoured with the Golden Boy Award in October 2015. Martial finished his rookie season on a high note, as United’s top scorer in the league across all competitions.

Following José Mourinho’s arrival, Martial was promoted to the starting lineup, but as the season progressed, he had numerous underwhelming performances due to personal issues, which caused him to lose his place in the starting lineup.

But he quickly returned to the starting lineup. He helped United reach the 2017 EFL semi-finals by scoring two goals.

He started in the EFL final and contributed to his team’s victory. He was also in the starting lineup as United won the 2017 Europa League, his first European trophy.
Martial, who was on the bench during the 2017/18 season, performed admirably as he received more playing time.

However, after the arrival of Alexis Sanchez, he had less playing time and was unable to score, prompting speculation that he would depart United. Martial was keen to enhance his goal-scoring ability for the 2018–19 season, and he was one of seven Manchester United players to score in five consecutive league games. He remained in excellent form, and in January 2019, he signed a five-year contract with Manchester United.

International Career

Martial competed for the French U-17 team in both the 2012 UEFA European Under-17 Championship Qualifiers and the tournament. He also competed for France at the 2013 U-19 European Championship. In August 2015, he was invited to play for the French senior team in a friendly against Portugal and Serbia, and he made his debut in September against Portugal.

He was picked for the final 23-man team for the Euros 2016, where France finished second. He did not make the final 23-man team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
