André Onana has said that he wants to “start to pay back” Manchester United fans for their help when he was getting used to life at Old Trafford at the beginning of the season.
The Cameroon international moved from Inter Milan to United last summer for £47 million ($59.4m). He was a key part of Inter Milan’s run to the 2023 Champions League final. In the 2022–23 event, he had eight clean sheets, which was more than any other player.
Things went badly for Onana at the beginning of his time at the club. He made mistakes that got a lot of attention in the Champions League against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray. United came last in their group, giving up 15 goals in six games.
The 28-year-old player has said in the past that it took him six months to “just feel good” at United. However, his recent improvement in form has been one of the few bright spots in a tough season for United.
In a special chat with ESPN, Onana talked about how moved he was by how much support he got from United fans when things were tough at first.
“When I got here, I got a lot of nice messages, and when I was having a hard time, Manchester United fans from all over the world told me to take my time.” “Everything will be fine because we know who you are,” he said.
It was strange, though, because a normal fan just wants the game to end. However, I got message(s)… Andy, don’t worry, we’ll be here for you. Do not stop.
“I was like, ‘Wow, I’ve never had this before.'” No matter where you go, most of the time they’re straight when you don’t give at the start. It’s not easy. But they were nice to me here, and I think it might be time to start paying them back now that they were nice to me.
Onana also talked about how he used his own patience and positive attitude to get through that time.

That means you have to be patient, but they also say you have to be tough, because then you can’t give up. Because you shouldn’t step in the game if you give up.

United is seventh in the league table after stumbling through the competitions. They were eliminated early from both the Champions League and the League Cup, leaving only the FA Cup as their only chance to win a trophy this season. On April 21, they play Coventry City in the semifinals. Onana said United will not be afraid of the Championship team.
“[We will] fight like it’s a big final, like the Champions League final, because it can be a tough game because they can be rude if you don’t treat them with respect.” He said, “We’re going to play them like a Premier League team.”
“If they make it to the semifinal, that means they’re very good, so we’ll be ready for them. Winning is very important to us, so we’ll go there with the mindset of winning.”
“You can’t lose this game to them. For that reason, we’re going there with a good attitude and a sense of duty to win.
