Following Manchester United’s disappointing victory against Coventry City, captain Bruno Fernandes has unexpectedly confessed that he and his teammates are not performing to the needed levels.
United advanced to the FA Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley Stadium after defeating Coventry in a penalty shootout.
The Red Devils led 3-0 with 20 minutes of regular time remaining, but they squandered it. Coventry scored three fast goals, including a late penalty shot when Aaron Wan Bissaka was found to have touched the ball within his own area.
Following extra time, both teams had to settle for a penalty shootout. Fortunately, Erik ten Hag’s men succeeded and spared themselves any further embarrassment.
Fernandes talked with ITV after the game and shared the opinions of many United supporters, who concluded that the team were terrible and buckled under duress from their substantially weaker Championship opponents.
The Portugal international also spoke on whether United’s season would be regarded successful if they defeated Manchester City and won the domestic championship.
Fernandes said, “We won’t be successful if we only win the FA Cup.”
He commented on the present poor standards, saying, “The level of this club is much greater than what we have been doing. We need to do better in the league, the League Cup, and Europe.”
“When they [Coventry City] scored a goal [very late in extra time], we thought it might be offside but we couldn’t tell from the front.”
“We put ourselves in a difficult position and should have killed it earlier, but we didn’t.”
He urged United’s players to improve significantly in the future.
United will have the opportunity to redeem themselves later this week, on Wednesday, when they play Premier League strugglers Sheffield United at Old Trafford.
