Manchester United suffered a heartbreaking defeat against Chelsea in a dramatic match that ended 4-3 in favor of the home team.
The visitors were on the brink of securing three points when Diogo Dalot fouled Noni Madueke in the final moments of added time.
Cole Palmer converted the resulting penalty before scoring again in the 111th minute with a shot deflected off Scott McTominay, sealing the victory for Chelsea.
Chelsea initially took a 2-0 lead through Conor Gallagher and Palmer, but United fought back with goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes, leveling the score before halftime.
Garnacho then put United ahead with a header from an Antony cross in the 67th minute before Chelsea’s late comeback.
Erik ten Hag, United’s manager, showed his frustration by heading straight to the tunnel after the final whistle without shaking hands with Mauricio Pochettino.
He was disappointed by the amount of added time and the two stoppage-time goals that cost his team dearly.
Harry Maguire advised Dalot to stay on the ground to waste time during added time, highlighting United’s lack of game management. The team’s inability to control the game in crucial moments has been a recurring issue this season.
The injury to Lisandro Martinez further compounded United’s woes, as Ten Hag’s options were limited. Experienced players like Casemiro, Raphael Varane, and Jonny Evans were substituted, leaving United vulnerable.
Willy Kambwala, a young center-back, impressed with his performance after replacing Evans.
However, his gesture to calm down the home fans in the 82nd minute served as a reminder to remain focused until the final whistle, highlighting the importance of concentration in crucial moments.
