Coventry seemed to have completed the comeback with a last-gasp extra-time goal when VAR saved United with a lucky offside call.
United rebounded from Casemiro’s horrific failed panenka at the opening of the penalty shootout, winning 4-2 from the spot after Coventry missed two.
However, the latest in a string of failures during Ten Hag’s difficult second season in command did nothing to help his chances of continuing manager into the summer.
And the Dutchman allegedly expressed his disappointment to his teammates once the relief of qualifying for the May 25 final worn off away from the cameras.

According to the Mail, Ten Hag yelled at his fragile players in the changing room after full-time for allowing another game they had dominated for 70 minutes to devolve into pandemonium.
The 54-year-old has often expressed his need for control as he seeks to put his vision on the field, but he has got nothing from his players this season.
His tactical orders have so been questioned. A wide gap between United’s midfield and defenders has been a familiar sight, as have attempts on Andre Onana’s goal.
These flaws have greatly led to disappointing outcomes, casting Ten Hag’s future in serious question. His furious, private response to the triumph demonstrates that his patience is wearing out.
During his post-match media obligations, Ten Hag seemed furious and conceded that United “got away with it” against Coventry.
