Because of what they were wearing on the training pitch, the club icon called out two of Erik Ten Hag’s best young players.
Paul Scholes, a former defender for Manchester United and England, has said that present Manchester United stars Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo were not up to par during a training session.
The 49-year-old shared again a picture from the official Manchester United Instagram page of the two kids practicing in the rain with their hoods up and hats and gloves on.
The 11-time Premier League winner wrote under the picture of the two: “Don’t mind the hats and gloves, but you can’t train right with your hood up…standards start on the training pitch…bye!”
In recent weeks, both Mainoo and Garnacho have been United’s most valuable players. They both played well in last Sunday’s draw with Liverpool at Old Trafford. The game ended in a tie thanks to a goal scored by 18-year-old Mainoo.
This is not the first time Scholes has complained online about how bad current football players are.
In January, the man from Manchester called out former Manchester United player Jesse Lingard on Instagram.
The 31-year-old put up a bunch of pictures on Instagram showing off his gym work while he was in Dubai. Lingard was a free agent at the time and looking for a new team to join.
He then joined FC Seoul in the K League, but his “lack of effort” has been attacked by the team’s boss.
Scholes would never be one to hold back, and he had some harsh words for Lingard. He told him to try to get back into football.
Lingard wrote on a picture of himself doing what looked like an ab workout, “Are you just going to f**k around in the gym or are you going to play football?”
Roy Keane, who used to play with Scholes, has been nicer to United’s young players lately.
Former United skipper and now Sky Sports commentator had some good things to say about 18-year-old Mainoo from Stockport.
He was from Cork and demanded that the more senior players in the club should help the 18-year-old.
Keane said, “He’s a smart, smart football player who can go all the way to the top.”
“The more experienced players will need to keep him in check and help him learn, but he’s calm, that much we know.”
“On defence, he can get around the field, but the kid does have a chance.”
On social media, some fans said Scholes was being too tough, while others said the former star midfielder had a point.
In a tweet, someone said, “Scholes should let those players enjoy their time; his time has passed.”
“He did good for calling it out,” said someone else. It really doesn’t make sense.”
“But they are the best players on the team,” said someone else. No matter what the shirts say.”
United is in sixth place in the Premier League, eleven points behind fifth-placed Aston Villa but with a game in hand.
Erik Ten Hag’s team plays at Bournemouth on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
