Opinion: Kobbie Mainoo could Now really frustrate Man City star after his well-deserved England call-up

Gareth Southgate was visibly impressed during the Manchester United vs Liverpool match, echoing the sentiments of many: “Wow. This Kobbie Mainoo is absolutely incredible.”

Before the wonderful FA Cup encounter, there was already a buzz around Kobbie Mainoo’s potential inclusion in the England squad, owing to his stellar performance at Manchester United. However, his prowess couldn’t be overlooked after the thrilling clash.

Ever since Erik ten Hag assumed the managerial role, he has been a staunch admirer of the 18-year-old talent. Despite a setback due to injuries in 2023, Mainoo has been a consistent presence in the squad since recovering from his ankle troubles in November.

Mainoo’s impact on the field has been undeniable, starting in almost every game over the last 21 matches across various competitions. His remarkable performance even sidelined more experienced players, leaving Christian Eriksen to voice his frustrations over playing time.

Initially, Gareth Southgate refrained from including Mainoo in the England squad, emphasizing the importance of allowing young talents like Mainoo to develop gradually. However, after witnessing Mainoo’s exceptional display against Liverpool, Southgate swiftly reconsidered, promoting him to the senior team without delay.

Mainoo’s versatility transcends the traditional role of a defensive midfielder. While adept at disrupting opponents’ plays and initiating attacks, his inclusion addresses England’s scarcity of such dynamic players.

The anticipation surrounding Mainoo’s call-up is palpable, especially considering England’s strong squad ahead of Euro 2024. However, there’s a notable gap in midfield, which Mainoo’s arrival could potentially fill, complementing talents like Phil Foden and Declan Rice.

With Mainoo in the picture, Southgate envisions a balanced midfield trio consisting of Rice, Bellingham, and Mainoo himself. This setup offers both defensive solidity and creative flair, catering to England’s tactical needs.

As Euro 2024 approaches, the excitement builds, fueled by the prospect of Mainoo’s inclusion reshaping England’s midfield dynamics. While uncertainties persist, the emergence of talents like Mainoo injects optimism and anticipation into the national team’s future endeavors.
