According to an update on Manchester United’s official website, midfielder Mason Mount has returned to training for the first time in four months. Mount, an England international, last played for the Red Devils in November in a match against Luton Town before sustaining a calf injury. His return to training is a positive development for manager Erik ten Hag, who will be pleased to have him back in contention.
Since joining Manchester United from Chelsea last summer, Mount has appeared in only 12 games across all competitions, contributing one assist. Although it’s uncertain whether he’ll be ready for selection in the upcoming FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool, Mount is expected to be available after the international break for the match against Brentford on March 30.
Mason Mount Returns to Full Training
Mount’s return to fitness is timely for Manchester United, who are aiming to secure a spot in the Champions League for next season. Currently sixth in the Premier League table, they are eight points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa with ten games remaining.
However, finishing fifth could also secure Champions League qualification, depending on England’s coefficient ranking compared to Germany and Italy. Opta statisticians anticipate England to have a higher coefficient than both rivals by season’s end, which would benefit Manchester United.
Earlier this month, Erik Ten Hag confirmed to the media that Mason Mount has been sidelined due to injury for Manchester United since his November calf injury, following his £60 million move from Chelsea last summer. Despite initial expectations of a one-month absence, Mount has yet to return to full training after nearly three months.
Manager Erik ten Hag emphasized the importance of ensuring Mount’s full fitness before rushing his return to action, acknowledging the frustration of the situation for the player. Ten Hag expressed empathy for Mount’s high expectations and stressed the need for a cautious approach to avoid any setbacks.
Regarding Mount’s potential return to play this season, Ten Hag affirmed his belief that the midfielder will indeed feature for Manchester United again before the campaign concludes. He emphasized the importance of allowing Mount to progress through his recovery process steadily and securely, with the hope that he can contribute to the team’s efforts by the end of the season.
Additionally, the imminent returns of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire, and Rasmus Hojlund from injury further strengthen Manchester United’s prospects, particularly for the crucial match against Liverpool. Their presence could significantly boost the club’s chances of advancing to the FA Cup semi-finals.
