This summer, Manchester United’s whole backline should be evaluated, and one prospective addition has been highlighted.
Erik ten Hag believes that one position in particular need the most attention this summer.
It’s the middle of defense, and his present choices at Manchester United are just not good enough to play gradually.
To make matters worse, Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans’ contracts are set to expire in June, while Victor Lindelof will be on the market.
This makes the post a priority, with maybe two required.
United has now been linked with one current Premier League centre-half.
Manchester United are following Lloyd Kelly
This summer, United’s defensive bolstering will be much more challenging than just buying a first-choice candidate and plugging him in.
Rather, the whole department needs an overhaul, including players who may have been the third choice at first.
This discusses the linkages that have surfaced about United’s recruiting intentions.
According to GiveMeSport, Manchester United is tracking Lloyd Kelly ahead of a possible free summer move.
The article was initially focused on Spurs’ summer transfer objectives, but it quickly turned to United, as it was revealed that both the 25-year-old Bournemouth defender and Tosin Adarabioyo are being monitored by United.
The signing of Adarabioyo, in particular, is one that the club’s recently recruited technical director, Jason Wilcox, is thought to be interested in; nevertheless, Kelly is a transaction along similar lines and therefore also makes sense.
Why Lloyd Kelly would be an excellent acquisition for Jason Wilcox.
Wilcox’s summer might be unlike any previous transfer window he has experienced at United, since Dan Ashworth’s arrival date remains unknown.
This allows him, to some extent, control over who enters and departs.
As a result, he’ll want to make an early impression on the team, and signing a player like Kelly for free would do that.
The 25-year-old Bournemouth defender has previously been linked with moves to Newcastle and Liverpool.
Eddie Howe is also a great supporter of the defender, as he told The Athletic in a 2020 interview.
“What I’m saying is what I believe, but with Lloyd, I truly believe he’s got everything he needs to be a top, top player.”
So Kelly would be an excellent signing for United if he was available for free; nevertheless, if given the option between Kelly and Adarabioyo, Adarabioyo would have to be chosen every time.
That being said, either for free strengthens the ranks at United and is an improvement over some present possibilities.
