A dramatic last-minute equalizer against Brentford and another late turnaround against Chelsea have raised concerns about Erik ten Hag’s management at Manchester United.
Despite leading in stoppage time in both matches, United only managed to secure one point from their last two games, further diminishing their hopes of Champions League qualification.
Injuries have compounded the team’s woes, with Victor Lindelof, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, and Tyrell Malacia all unavailable for the trip to Chelsea.
The absence of key defenders forced United to field a depleted backline against Mauricio Pochettino’s side, and injuries to Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans during the match have left the club facing a defensive crisis ahead of their clash with Liverpool.
Ben Dinnery, founder of Premier Injuries, provided an update on the injury situation, revealing that Lindelof and Martinez are expected to be sidelined for at least a month.
The extent of Varane and Evans’ injuries is yet to be determined, but their potential absence for an extended period would be a significant blow to United’s defensive options for the remainder of the season.
With the defensive ranks depleted, ten Hag faces a selection dilemma as he prepares for the crucial North West Derby against Liverpool.
While right-back appears to be a settled position with Diogo Dalot as the first choice, the uncertainty lies in central defense.
Harry Maguire is likely to start, but his partner remains uncertain, with Willy Kambwala potentially stepping in due to the absence of Martinez, Varane, and Lindelof.
At left-back, Aaron Wan-Bissaka is the preferred option, with Shaw’s inconsistent form and Malacia’s lack of involvement presenting limited alternatives.
The makeshift nature of United’s backline underscores the challenges facing ten Hag as he navigates the defensive crisis ahead of the pivotal clash with Liverpool.
