John Murtough, who has resigned as director of football at Manchester United, will depart the club this week.
After his gardening leave ends, Newcastle United’s sports director Dan Ashworth will take over for the 50-year-old, who has been at Old Trafford for more than a decade.
After Sir Jim Ratcliffe bought a small part in the club, INEOS restructured, and this development is another evidence of it.
After stints in the Premier League, Fulham, and Everton, Murtough joined United in 2013.
As they continue to make significant transfers in preparation for next season, the club is expected to announce his departure shortly.
In addition to Ashworth, United’s new technical director Jason Wilcox, who is currently the director of football at Southampton, will also be joining United at Old Trafford.
If United and the Championship club can come to an agreement, Wilcox is expected to take up the new post within the next few weeks.
Talks to get Ashworth out of Newcastle reportedly have stalled, so United may have to wait a bit longer to get his talents.
After he told the Magpies of his want to depart in February, they put him on gardening leave. Now, reports indicate that they are asking £20 million in compensation in order to allow Ashworth to transfer to Old Trafford.
After working together at Everton, former manager David Moyes invited Murtough to Old Trafford to lead United’s academy.
After that, Ed Woodward appointed him head of football development in 2016, and in 2021, he became Manchester United’s first football director.
He was in charge of the men’s, women’s, and academy departments.
Once Ashworth and Wilcox’s arrivals are verified, they will now divide up Murtough’s tasks.
Omar Berrada, meanwhile, will succeed Richard Arnold, who left in November, as chief executive officer in the summer.
Along with his colleagues Andy O’Boyle, David Harrison, and Matt Hargreaves, Murtough was instrumental in the 2022 appointment of Erik ten Hag as manager and helped assemble the present roster.
