After Manchester United’s draw with Brentford over the weekend, it was expected that Mason Mount, the goalscorer, would speak in the mixed zone.
However, he opted not to, although he did give an interview with MUTV, expressing disappointment with the team’s overall performance and the need to improve to secure wins.
Mount’s goal celebration, sprinting to the corner where the fans were and sliding on his knees while embracing the United badge on his shirt, reflected his belief that he had secured victory. However, United conceded moments later, nullifying the significance of his goal.
While Mount’s time at United since his £55 million transfer from Chelsea hasn’t gone entirely to plan, there’s still ample opportunity to turn it around.
Erik ten Hag, who has been following Mount’s career since his loan spell with Vitesse in the Eredivisie, made him a priority midfield signing last summer to inject energy into the team.
Mount’s recent performances, including his cameo against Liverpool and his impact against Brentford, highlight his potential to make a difference on the pitch.
With his return from injury, starting him against his former club Chelsea seems like a logical decision to maintain momentum.
However, the question remains about where Mount should be positioned on the pitch.
While he was initially signed to play in a deeper midfield role, starting him alongside Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes might not provide the defensive stability United need against Chelsea.
Considering the importance of defensive balance, Casemiro should start against Chelsea to ensure midfield stability.
This might mean that Mount could play on the right wing or in central attacking midfield, where he can contribute effectively without compromising defensive solidity.
