Manchester United have found Kobbie Mainoo’s midfield partner for the next decade

Manchester United is gearing up for the summer transfer market with several positions needing attention, but they may have already identified Kobbie Mainoo’s midfield partner for the long term.

Mainoo has emerged as Manchester United’s brightest talent since his debut against Everton in November 2023. Amid a whirlwind few months, he earned an England call-up, signaling the club’s intention to build the midfield around him.

With Casemiro aging and Sofyan Amrabat’s loan deal nearing its end, Manchester United is seeking alternative defensive midfield options to complement Mainoo’s presence at Old Trafford.

According to transfer expert Ben Jacobs, speaking to GiveMeSport, Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes has become a “top target” for Manchester United. However, any potential transfer would hinge on the departure of at least one midfielder from the current squad.

Jacobs explained, “I think Joao Gomes is among Manchester United’s top midfield targets. The first thing to say is that the midfield will depend, at least in that position on Casemiro, on whether he departs. There is firm Saudi interest.”

He further added, “Christian Eriksen has already said that he’s unhappy with his game time, so potentially he’s also outgoing.

We know there’ll be interest in Scott McTominay, but Manchester United value him. However, he’s also been linked with various clubs for the last few windows.”

Gomes, at 23 years old, could form a promising partnership with Mainoo at Old Trafford for years to come. The Brazilian has impressed since joining Wolves in January 2023 and is comfortable playing as a defensive midfielder, allowing Mainoo to thrive in his box-to-box role.

While Transfermarkt suggests Gomes is valued at £25 million, with four years remaining on his contract at Molineux, reports of a £40 million price tag are more plausible.

The potential acquisition of Gomes is seen as a sensible move for Manchester United, especially considering Casemiro’s declining abilities.

Additionally, the deal represents a more prudent signing compared to previous high-priced transfers, making it a favorable option for the Red Devils.
