Liverpool has joined Manchester United in the pursuit of brilliant Barcelona centre-back Mikayil Faye, according to Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo.
Despite having yet to make a first-team appearance for the Spanish giants, Faye has already piqued the interest of all the world’s best clubs, thanks to his enormous talent and performance for the reserve squad and the Senegal national team.
Faye joined Barcelona in the summer, therefore it is surprising that he has yet to make his debut for the Spanish club. However, given that Ronald Araujo and Pau Cubarsi have established themselves in central defence, this is not surprising.
However, Liverpool, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, AS Monaco, and LOSC Lille are all interested in signing him next summer. However, it seems like any club’s efforts will be unsuccessful, as Barcelona appear to have a plan for him.
A left-footed center-back who is tough, pacy, excellent with the ball, and has a shot in his locker that would make a number nine proud. Defenders like Faye are almost tough to find, and Barcelona would understand this better than any other team.
What circumstances could lead to a sale?
Although common logic would dictate that Barcelona should deem Faye unsellable, the Spanish club does not have that luxury right now. Their financial situation is widely publicized, and they may have to make difficult choices this summer.
Given the level of attention that Faye is generating, he becomes a very marketable asset for Barcelona. If the necessity arises, the club may decide to let the Senegalese wonderkid depart and utilize the money to improve their condition.
If Manchester United want to get Faye, they must prepare for a transfer war with some of Europe’s elite teams. Given their present circumstances, it may be a struggle that they will lose.
Right now, the interest in Faye is more speculative than anything. There’s hardly much to read into this. The club will have to keep an eye on his situation and how it plays out over the next several months.
