Rumour has it that the Red Devils will have trouble recruiting the “best in class” due to a Liverpool-related issue, and Graham Potter and Roberto De Zerbi, manager of Brighton, are the two most prominent candidates to succeed Erik ten Hag as United manager.
There will be a change at Old Trafford thanks to Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS partners. Even though he is just a minority owner, Ratcliffe has complete control over Manchester United and can do everything he wants, including hiring the “best in class.” There has been significant progress on that front.
Following the end of his gardening leave, Omar Berrada will take over as CEO of Manchester United after being pulled in from Manchester City.
Aside from that, United are hoping to hire Dan Ashworth from Newcastle to be their sports director and Jason Wilcox, who was formerly at Southampton, to be their technical director.
The addition of Berrada, Ashworth, and Wilcox—all highly recognised in their respective fields—should provide United with the kind of elite leadership they’ve been missing since Ferguson’s departure.
Ratcliffe may need to bring in a new manager if he is serious about restoring Manchester United to their former glory in English football.
The Dutch manager’s methods have been criticised by club veteran Rio Ferdinand, who called Ten Hag’s tactics “kamikaze” after United’s collapse this campaign.
“If kamikaze, open sesame, no control of the game football is what we’re looking for, he has it nailed on and is doing a great job at it because that’s what we’re playing,” Ferdinand remarked earlier in April.
In their previous four league matches, United have allowed an incredible 107 shots to their opponents, and they have failed to secure a victory in any of them.
Their chances of making the Champions League are slim, and even if they won the FA Cup, it would only be to cover up their shortcomings.
Manchester World writer Rich Fay claims that United’s new policy of only hiring the “best in class” might lead to Ten Hag’s dismissal.
The quest of perfection will be hindered by Man Utd’s delays.
But Manchester United have not yet decided on a manager, so they may have to scramble to find second-tier alternatives.
The three clubs mentioned by Fay—Barcelona, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich—are all expected to choose new managers this summer.
For months, all three teams have been aware that they need a new manager. Liverpool, in particular, has been working to get Ruben Amorim, a highly regarded coach at Sporting CP.
If Ratcliffe does decide to fire Ten Hag, as Fay pointed out, top-tier managers would have already planned their responses.
The leaders are Potter and De Zerbi.
The journalist did note that Manchester United are now doing preliminary background checks on prospective future managers.
Thought to be replacing Thomas Tuchel at Bayern, Julian Nagelsmann is respected.
Graham Potter and Roberto De Zerbi are reportedly the leading candidates for the position, according to Fay.
The two candidates are “not exactly in keeping with their best in class approach,” according to the reporter.
After being let go by Chelsea in April of 2023, Potter has been unemployed for the last year.
As Brighton’s manager, De Zerbi has guided the club into its first European campaign and received nothing but praise for his efforts.
But, similar to Ten Hag, De Zerbi has taken heat for Brighton’s many crushing losses, which he attributes to his open style of play.
Among Brighton’s losses this season include those against Aston Villa (6-1), Luton Town (4-0), Fulham (3-0), Arsenal (3-0), and Roma (4-0) in the Europa League.
