Manchester United face Coventry City tomorrow in what may be the greatest game of Erik ten Hag’s tenure at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag leads his United squad to Wembley knowing that a victory is required and that if they fail, he would face even more pressure from fans.
The Dutchman is already battling for his position.
With Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS now engaged at United, Ten Hag faces even more pressure as the new ownership considers its options ahead of the summer.
Of course, replacing Ten Hag with the proper guy would be another story. England manager Gareth Southgate has been connected, but United supporters haven’t taken the rumor kindly.
And, speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday just now, Paul Merson feels there is just one candidate for the position.
Paul Merson picks the only person who can replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.
When asked about tomorrow’s semi-final and what it may imply for Ten Hag’s future, Merson feels a change is required, and there is only one guy for the job.
“What do we lose? Get beaten by Coventry? Wow! He’d be fortunate if he made it back on the bus. Wouldn’t you? It can’t happen. It’s possible, but he’d never return to his work. “I think something has to change here,” Merson said.
“Personally, I believe they need someone like Ancelotti. I know it’s a fast fix, and I know Man United doesn’t need one, but if you saw the game the other night, Ancelotti has superstars running themselves into the ground, leaving nothing on the field. That’s not what I see at Manchester United.
“In my view, they need to win the FA Cup if they want to retain him. Again, it could only be Ancelotti. I don’t see anybody else going in at Manchester United. I understand it’s a fast fix, but they need to go back to fundamentals. They need elite players who aren’t even mentioned in the same sentence as some of Real Madrid’s stars to work as hard as they do. And I don’t see that right now at Manchester United.”
Carlo Ancelotti should have joined Manchester United years ago
Carlo Ancelotti, 64, is one of the greatest and most experienced managers in the world.
However, although he might perform well at United right now, he should have joined the club sooner.
United seem to have missed the boat on Ancelotti many moons ago, and for him to return to Manchester again would undoubtedly need a significant change.
He is at ease at Real Madrid, well-liked, and successful.
United may have to go elsewhere yet again.
